The word Iguaçu means "big water" in the Tupi-guarani etymology. Foz do Iguaçu is located in the extreme west of the State of Paraná, on the border of Brazil with Paraguay and Argentina. Together with Ciudad del Este and Puerto Iguazu, it is part of one of the biggest cultural tourist destinations in South America. It is a place full of enchantment, with natural and artificial attractions, excellent hotel facilities and a perfect reception and event infrastructure.
The so-called "eighth wonder of the world" is located in the city of Foz do Iguaçú: the majestic Iguaçú Falls. With 272 falls, up to 83m tall, the Falls are formed by the Iguaçú River. The major attraction is the Garganta do Diabo (Devil's Throat), which is on the Argentinean side. You may enjoy a boat tour over the rapids of the Falls, in the exciting Macuco Safári.
But, Foz do Iguaçú offers other attractions like the Iguaçú National Park, one of the most beautiful ecological reserves in the world, with 225,000 hectares, and recognized by UNESCO as a Natural Heritage of Humanity. Its falls and the vegetation include 340 species of birds, 700 of butterflies, 40 of mammals, and the Floriano River, which is totally unpolluted. There is also a visitor center, electric bus and the Porto de Canoas, a space with souvenir shops and a panoramic restaurant.
But, there is more. The visitor may visit the Parque das Aves (Birds' Park), the largest hydro-electrical power station in the world, the Ponte da Amizade (Friendship Bridge), and also shop in Paraguay and Argentina.
Nightlife is quite busy, with casinos, pubs and beerhouses, turning the area into a fascinating place, full of attractions. The region's typical food is served in a variety of restaurants.
A diversified handcraft is also present in Foz, reflecting some of the local customs, its culture and the tourism attractions of the region. The main product, which can be found easily, is ceramics in its varied shapes and techniques. The majority of the artisan riches produced in Foz do Iguaçú can be found at Cooperativa de Artesanato da Região Oeste e Sudoeste do Paraná (Coart).
